Authorities said a tornado struck a northern suburb of Birmingham, Alaska, late Monday night, killing at least one person, collapsing buildings and trapping people in their homes.
Local meteorologists report that the storm, which struck Fultondale before 11pm local time, was part of a cluster of severe weather systems that stretched across much of the southeast.
Bill Yates, Jefferson County Coroner, WBRC saidOne death related to the typhoon has been confirmed, a local TV station, but has not provided any other information. The authorities expected more dead and wounded.
Photos circulating online showed that the Hampton Inn off Highway 65 in Fultondale was damaged by the tornado, which tore off part of the roof.
