The S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 indices closed at record levels for the 11th session of trading on Monday, led by strong gains in auto, information technology, consumer goods and pharmaceutical stocks. Benchmarks opened an opening gap and extended gains in the last hour of trading on the back of the partial recovery in bank stocks. The Sensex index rose by 521 points to record an all-time high of 49303.79, and the Nifty 50 index touched a record high of 14488.30.
The Sensex index ended 1 percent, or 487 points, to close at an all-time high of 49269, and the Nifty 50 index rose 138 points, or 1 percent, to close at a record high of 14485.
Six sector metrics compiled by the National Stock Exchange ended higher, led by the Nifty IT Index, which increased 3 percent.
