New Sony televisions accept Google TV and are PlayStation 5 ready

Sony At CES 2021 to announce the new 2021 line of smart TVs. These new Sony TVs are compatible with Google TV, making them the first TV we’ve seen with Google TV on it. It also includes HDMI 2.1 across the entire range. Embrace the new PlayStation 5 (plus Xbox Series X | S).

Sony today announced its new Bravia XR 4K and 8K TVs at CES 2021. They all support 4K at 120Hz, as well as VRR (variable refresh rate) and ALLM (automatic low latency mode). There is also support for eARC. This is all available out of the box which means you won’t be waiting for any firmware updates to use these features.

The big buzzword for Sony this year is “cognitive intelligence” when it comes to televisions. These TVs are powered by a new Cognitive Processor XR chip. Which Sony says its new system goes beyond traditional signal processing. Something that Sony TVs have really excelled at over the years. Sony says in its press release, “While traditional artificial intelligence (AI) can only detect and analyze image elements such as color, contrast and detail individually, the new processor can analyze a bunch of elements simultaneously, just as our brains do. Doing so, each item gets tweaked to its best end result, along with each other, so everything is synced and lifelike – something traditional AI cannot achieve.

Featuring an 8K LCD and 4K OLED display, the new Master Series TVs use a new sensor to detect the color temperature of ambient light in your room. This allows these TVs to adjust the white balance in their televisions to match. You can turn this off if you wish.

Sony was one of the first companies to fully embrace Android TV, and now it is doing the same with Google TV

The same Google TV interface that we saw on Chromecast last year will be available on the new Sony Bravia XR TVs this year. This makes it the first TV and the first to use Google TV, outside of Chromecast. Given that Sony was the first to adopt Android TV across all of its TVs, this should come as no surprise.

This means that customers who purchase these new Sony TV models will be able to play Google TV and use a more intuitive system to find something to watch. Because Google TV shows you what’s available, depending on which subscription services you have. This can be very helpful.

There is no word yet on whether Sony plans to bring Google TV to older Android TV models via software update.
