“In emergency use, we have now used it on nearly a million people. We have not received any reports of serious adverse reactions, and only a few have some mild symptoms,” Liu said.
Liu said the vaccine was given to Chinese construction workers, diplomats and students who have gone to more than 150 countries around the world during the epidemic – and none of them reported an infection.
He said on November 6 that 56,000 people had received emergency vaccinations and then went abroad.
“For example, a transnational corporation has 99 employees in one of its overseas offices, 81 of whom were vaccinated. Later, the disease broke out in the office, and 10 of the 18 people who were not vaccinated became infected and none of them were vaccinated.”
Separately, he said, Sinopharm has conducted phase 3 clinical trials that included nearly 60,000 people in 10 countries – including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Peru and Argentina. CNN has not seen results from these trials yet.
Sinopharm has two candidate vaccines. It is not clear which vaccine Liu referred to.
Since July, Chinese drugmakers have been providing experimental vaccines to people working in “high-risk” occupations under the Emergency Use Program, which allows candidate vaccines to be used on a limited scale before their safety and efficacy has been fully proven through clinical trials. .
Pfizer is expected to seek emergency use permission from the US Food and Drug Administration for its vaccine on Friday.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief US infectious disease expert, said the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines had shown extraordinary efficacy.
“This is extraordinary,” Fauci said. “This is roughly the level of what we see with the measles vaccine, and it is 98% effective.”
