Governor Gretchen Whitmire’s administration Sunday ordered high schools and colleges to shut down personal classes, shuttered restaurants for indoor dining and halted organized sports in an effort to curb Michigan’s soaring rates..
The restrictions will start on Wednesday and last for three weeks. It is not as sweeping as it was when the ruler issued a file, But it is extensive.
In addition, the order written by the state Ministry of Health limits internal residential gatherings to no more than two families, limits outdoor gatherings to 25 people, and closes recreational facilities such as theaters, bowling alleys, and indoor water parks. Gyms and swimming pools can remain open for individual exercises, not group classes.
The move comes at a time when the state is facing a spike in new cases of coronavirus and hospitalization.
“If we don’t act now, thousands more will die, and our hospitals will remain overwhelmed,” Whitmire said. “We can overcome this together by hearing health experts again and taking action now to slow the spread of this deadly virus.”
Robert Gordon, director of the state’s Department of Health and Human Services, said, “Indoor gatherings are the biggest source of the spread of the disease, and we focus on severely reducing them.”
