The European Space Agency announced that the mission of the large aerial survey of infrared radiation outside the solar system (Ariel) has moved from the study stage to the implementation stage. An industrial contractor will be selected to build the spacecraft. Ariel’s mission is to study the components of exoplanets and how they form and evolve.
To do this, the mission It will scan a variety of samples from about 1,000 planetary atmospheres simultaneously at both visible and infrared wavelengths. The first mission will be dedicated to measuring the chemical and thermal compositions of exoplanets. The expedition will investigate how the planet’s chemistry relates to the environment in which it was formed.
The European Space Agency also hopes to determine the mission along with whether the type of star drives the physics and chemistry of planetary evolution. The observations made by the spacecraft will provide insight into the early stages of planetary formation and the atmosphere along with their subsequent development. Scientists say that studying these exoplanets will provide insights into how our solar system fits into the universe as a whole.
The European Space Agency chose Ariel in 2018 as the fourth medium-class space mission in the European Space Agency’s Cosmic Vision plan. The European Space Agency took on the mission during a science program committee meeting on November 12, paving the way toward building the spacecraft. Ariel will be the third exoplanet mission to be launched in ten years.
