House moves to force Trump to step down, pledging accountability if Pence doesn’t act

At one point, Mr. Trump told the vice president that he had spoken with Mark Martin, the former chief justice of North Carolina, who said he had told him that Pence had such strength. Mr. Pence had assured Mr. Trump that he had not. Trump made the Vice President defend his reasoning in a meeting with the attorneys Rudolf Giuliani helped shape.

Both parties acknowledge that they do not have a clear picture of how many senators in the party would ultimately vote to convict Mr. Trump.

Mr. Tommy said that Mr. Trump had “descended into a kind of frenzy” since the election and had effectively “barred himself” from running for office again. But one day after describing Mr. Trump’s behavior as “impeachable,” Mr. Tommy argued that impeachment would be impractical with Mr. Trump already heading out.

“I think the best way for our country, Chuck, is for the president to resign and leave as soon as possible,” he told host Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “I acknowledge that it may not be likely, but I think it will be the best.”

Speaking with colleagues about the possibility of his impeachment again, Mr. Trump was struck by the fact that few of his defense team at last year’s Senate trial would be part of any new measure.

Jay Sekulo, who served as his main personal attorney, and two other private attorneys, Marty Raskin and Jane Raskin, will not participate in a defense against future impeachment, according to a person familiar with the planning, and Pat A. will not participate. White House Counselor, or Patrick F. Philbin, his deputy.

This time, only a few of his allies on Capitol Hill offered to speak in defense as well. Among those who have been used, many have used calls for “unity” to argue against impeachment or to call for Mr. Trump’s resignation. In most cases, lawmakers insisted that Democrats should let the country “move” were among those who, even after Wednesday’s violence, voted to overturn election results in key swing states that Biden won based on allegations of widespread voter fraud before. Courts and states themselves said they were bogus.
