Google launched a $ 3,000 fund to combat vaccine misinformation

SAN FRANCISCO: The Google News Initiative Tuesday launched an open global fund to combat misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines, valued at up to US $ 3 million.

The “Open Covid-19 Disinformation Fund” aims to support journalistic efforts to effectively verify misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccination process, Alphabet’s Google initiative stated in a blog post.

“While the Covid-19 information epidemic is global in nature, misinformation has also been used to target specific populations,” she added.

“Some of the available research also indicates that audiences who encounter misinformation and those seeking to verify facts do not necessarily overlap.”

The fund will accept projects looking to expand the audience for fact-finding operations, particularly for groups disproportionately affected by disinformation.

Applications will be reviewed by a team of 14 jurors from various academic, media, medical and not-for-profit sectors, as well as representatives from the World Health Organization.

In December, the Google News Initiative pledged $ 1.5 million to fund a Covid-19 Vaccine Media Center to support fact-checking research.
