The explosion occurred on the first floor of this five-story hospital facility located in the southwestern city of Chernivtsi, emergency services said.
“An oxygen line exploded and started the fire”, leaving one dead and another wounded, they said. Twenty people were evacuated before the fire that broke out fifteen minutes after the explosion.
Images from the disaster areas showed charred beds and chairs and blackened bedding strewn on the floor. According to the mayor of Chernivtsi Roman Klichuk, the fire broke out in one “of the units where patients infected with the coronavirus were treated.”
The injured patient, who has severe burns, is in intensive care. “Doctors are doing what they can” to save him, the mayor added. In early February, a young doctor and three patients died in a fire which occurred in the intensive care unit for Covid-19 patients at a hospital in Zaporizhzhya, in southwestern Ukraine. In January, a fire killed 16 people at an undeclared retirement home in Kharkiv, in the east of the country.
