Compact smartphones aren’t easy to find these days, at least not so good. This makes these two devices more interesting. Before we start with this comparison, note that the two phones are not in the same price range (the iPhone 12 Mini costs twice that). Google Pixel 4a vs Apple iPhone 12 Mini: Design

These two phones are very different when it comes to design. The Google Pixel 4a is made of plastic, and its back curves towards the sides. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Mini comes with a metal frame and a glass back. To make things more different, the sides of this phone are completely flat. The same goes for the top and the bottom as well.

The inner feeling is completely different because of it, it all depends on what you prefer. It’s hard to deny that the iPhone 12 Mini feels more premium. Pixel 4a feels flexible. The iPhone 12 Mini has this awkward notch, albeit quite bulky, especially on a very small phone. The Pixel 4a has a more aesthetically pleasing solution, which is a camera hole for the view in the upper-left corner.

The bezels are very thin on both phones, although the Pixel 4a bottom bezel is a bit thicker than the rest. IPhone 12 Mini has two cameras on the back, while Pixel 4a has two. It also includes a fingerprint scanner on the back, while the iPhone 12 Mini doesn’t include a fingerprint scanner at all. Apple offers shipping with an advanced face scanner instead of a fingerprint scanner.

IPhone 12 Mini is shorter, narrower, and thinner … in addition to being a little lighter. It has a smaller screen. Both phones look very nice. The iPhone 12 Mini definitely feels more premium in the hand, while the Pixel 4a looks more modern, at least from the front, because it doesn’t have a great notch. It is all a matter of taste, what do you prefer most.

Google Pixel 4a vs Apple iPhone 12 Mini: Display

Both phones come with flat screens, and both are OLEDs. Moreover, they both offer the same resolution, FullHD + (2340 x 1080) resolution with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. This is where the similarities end. Google Pixel 4a includes a larger 5.81 inch OLED display with HDR support. IPhone 12 Mini features a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with HDR10 support. By the way, Pixel 4a offers a higher screen-to-body ratio.

Pixel 4a comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, while Apple uses a scratch-resistant ceramic glass. Dolby Vision is supported on the iPhone 12 Mini screen. So, you see, these two screens are completely different. You will also get a completely different realistic experience with both, because the colors are different. However, both offer strong colors, with deep blacks, as you’d expect from OLED screens. Moreover, viewing angles are also excellent in both.

The iPhone 12 Mini’s screen looks better on paper, and in real life … well, it gets brighter on the outside, a little brighter. Other than that, they both look really good, although there are much better panels. These two monitors also run at 60Hz, so they’re not that much of a refresh rate, in case you were wondering.

Google Pixel 4a vs Apple iPhone 12 Mini: performance

How about performance? Well, internally, the iPhone 12 Mini is a lot more powerful … a lot more powerful. The device is powered by the new Apple A14 Bionic 5nm processor. This is a top-tier processor, unlike the Pixel 4a Snapdragon 730G. It is almost certain that this chip will last longer at this level than the Snapdragon 730G. At the moment, both of them are very good at regular use.

For the vast majority of people, both phones will be powerful enough. They can do everyday smartphone things with ease, and do so smoothly. You will not notice any delay or anything on either phone. IPhone 12 Mini will run better games and other processor-intensive tasks, as expected. The Apple A14 Bionic is a much more powerful processor. For everything other than graphics-intensive tasks, both phones will suffice.

It applies to multimedia consumption, browsing, opening / closing of applications, multitasking, etc. You won’t really notice much difference in those daily tasks. Google Pixel 4a really manages to surprise its level of performance. Google has really managed to improve Android 11 well on this device.

Google Pixel 4a vs Apple iPhone 12 Mini: the battery

If you are a true power user, neither of these phones will likely provide sufficient battery life for your needs. However, the battery life on it isn’t bad, at all, especially on the Pixel 4a. We were able to get nearly 6 hours of screen on time over fairly long days, with no games. The iPhone 12 Mini drops below that, but the battery life doesn’t seem to be as bad as it was originally thought. However, there are much better options if battery life is of the utmost importance to you. Games will kill the iPhone 12 Mini’s battery very quickly. This processor can drain it quickly when under stress.

Now, both devices support fast charging. IPhone 12 Mini comes with 20W fast wired charging, while Pixel 4a supports 18W wired fast charging. Wired charging is the only form of charging Pixel 4a phones. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Mini offers 12W wireless charging as well. So the iPhone 12 Mini wins the charging comparison, sort of. Neither of them has broken any records when it comes to charging, as charging speeds both seem very outdated in this day and age.

Google Pixel 4a vs Apple iPhone 12 Mini: cameras

Both phones are excellent in the camera department. They both include 12MP cameras, which come with great software processing. Google Sensor is a little outdated, but Google’s algorithms work wonders with images. Apple has also done a great job with image processing, so the iPhone 12 Mini can produce excellent still photos in all conditions. The Pixel 4a still does a little better in low light, although both are excellent. Both can capture a great deal of detail, and deliver really sharp images with great dynamic range.

IPhone 12 Mini has the advantage of that second camera on the back. This is a fairly efficient ultra-wide camera, just don’t use it in low light, it doesn’t perform well in such conditions. Video recording is better on the iPhone 12 Mini, and the device offers 4K at 60 fps recording, unlike the Pixel 4a. You can’t go wrong with any of these devices when it comes to cameras.

the sound

If you still use wired headphones / headphones, the Google Pixel 4a might be the best choice. why? Well, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack, unlike the iPhone 12 Mini. Having said that, the sound through headphones is no different between the two. It’s okay, balanced, but we heard better. They both still do more than a good job in this department for the vast majority of you, as long as you have a decent pair of earphones / headphones. The same goes for wireless connectivity too, as both support Bluetooth 5.0.

Now, when it comes to headphones, they both offer stereo speakers. Both settings are good, but not excellent. In fact, the iPhone 12 Mini could deliver clearer sound, at least that’s what it sounded like. Distortion is minimal at higher volumes, and both settings beep loud enough. We’ve heard better speakers than these, that’s for sure, much better.
