The information has been revealed in the last hours: a second French citizen is detained against his will in Iran. A new issue of friction in the offing with Paris, in the context of major maneuvers around the Iran nuclear deal. This is a tourist detained 9 months ago and detained since then without explanation. He was arrested in a desert area in the north of the country.
It is his Iranian lawyer who reveals the case. He explains that Benjamin, 35, has been detained for several months in a jail in the northeast of the country for reasons that have not yet been determined. His lawyer speaks of false accusations and assures that the Iranian authorities prevent him from accessing the file. According to Point, this French tourist was arrested in May 2020 on the border with Turkmenistan while touring Iran in a van.
His relatives say that he had been on vacation for several months in the country and that they do not understand why he was detained. The Quai d’Orsay says it is closely monitoring this case and has made several consular visits to the French detainee. Another Frenchwoman is also still detained in Iran.
